    About Wild Bill Hickok

Wild Bill Hickok is the old time radio western for the whole family, and here you can listen free online or follow the free podcast. Guy Madison stars as Wild Bill, United States Marshal, and Andy Devine rides beside him as his big, gravel-voiced deputy Jingles, the same pair who starred in the Wild Bill Hickok TV series of the 1950s. Andy opens every show himself: "Hold on to your hats!" The episodes here run from the very first broadcast on April 1, 1951, to the last day of 1954.

The real James Butler Hickok was a scout, lawman and gunfighter of the 1860s and 70s. The radio show makes him a lawman of the storybook West, riding into places like Mule Mesa and Candy Flat to face rustlers, claim jumpers, stagecoach bandits and crooked bankers. Wild Bill is calm and a dead shot; Jingles is big-hearted, brave and always one step from trouble, and his jokes keep the half hour light. Kellogg's sponsored the show, so the early episodes come with Kellogg's Corn Pops commercials by Andy and Guy themselves.

Each story is a complete half-hour adventure, written and directed by Paul Pierce, with Hollywood radio actors in the guest parts and plenty of hoofbeats, gunfire and saloon pianos. It is a western made for kids in the age of Hopalong Cassidy and the Lone Ranger, which makes it a fine one to share with children or grandchildren today, and a nostalgic listen for anyone who grew up with it on the radio or on TV.
