About Dry Gulch

Dry Gulch is a free old time radio westerns channel from Stupid Potato: complete episodes of classic radio westerns, played back to back 24 hours a day. It plays Gunsmoke with William Conrad, Have Gun, Will Travel with John Dehner, Tales of the Texas Rangers with Joel McCrea, The Six Shooter with James Stewart, Fort Laramie with Raymond Burr and Frontier Gentleman, plus Wild Bill Hickok and other frontier adventures. Listen free online with no account, or follow the Dry Gulch podcast for the newest episodes from its series.

Most of these shows come from the 1950s, the last great years of network radio drama, when CBS set out to make westerns for grown-ups instead of children. Gunsmoke began in 1952 because CBS chairman William S. Paley wanted "a Philip Marlowe of the Old West," and producer Norman Macdonnell and writer John Meston gave him a weary, honest marshal in 1870s Dodge City. Macdonnell went on to make Fort Laramie and the radio version of Have Gun, Will Travel, and his sound crews' creaking saddle leather and spurs on the boardwalk set a standard radio rarely matched.

The town of Dry Gulch has its own law: Marshal Ramrod, a hard-bitten, iron-jawed lawman who gives troublemakers one warning, and his quick-tempered deputy, Buckshot. Between episodes the marshal keeps order with few words and very dry humor. The channel is for western fans, old-time radio listeners, long drives, and anyone who grew up on TV's Gunsmoke and wants to hear where it started. Gunsmoke, Have Gun, Will Travel and the other headline series also have their own channels here.

Dry Gulch plays complete Gunsmoke radio episodes, with William Conrad as Matt Dillon, on a free 24/7 stream at stupidpotato.com, alongside other classic radio westerns. Gunsmoke also has its own Stupid Potato channel.

Who played Matt Dillon on the Gunsmoke radio show?

William Conrad played Marshal Matt Dillon for the whole radio run, from 1952 to 1961. James Arness played him on television.

Was Have Gun, Will Travel a radio show?

Yes. After Richard Boone made it a TV hit, CBS Radio ran its own version from November 1958 to November 1960, with John Dehner as Paladin. It is a rare case of a show that went from television to radio rather than the other way around.

What are the best old-time radio westerns?

Gunsmoke, which TV Radio Mirror named the best western on radio in 1957, is the usual first pick. Fans also prize Have Gun, Will Travel, Fort Laramie, Frontier Gentleman, The Six Shooter with James Stewart and Tales of the Texas Rangers with Joel McCrea, and Dry Gulch plays all of them.

Is Dry Gulch free?

Yes. Dry Gulch is free, live around the clock: no sign-up, no app and no subscription. Potato Plus is optional and never required.

Do I need an account or an app for Dry Gulch?

No. It is an internet radio channel, live 24 hours a day: press Listen live, no sign-up and no app needed.

Are there ads on Dry Gulch?

No modern ads, and we promise none until Valentine's Day 2027 (February 14). Nothing breaks into the show to sell you something you never asked for. Any commercials you hear are the original sponsor spots that aired with the broadcast.
