What happens
Scotland Yard looks into the death of Alfred Jones, a hotel keeper at the Blue Anchor, after he dies suddenly of poisoning. The inquiry centres on Jean-Pierre Vaquier, a flamboyant French inventor and former wireless operator who has been staying at the inn and carrying on an affair with Mabel Jones, the innkeeper's wife. The transcript breaks off during the investigation, when the police first begin to take Vaquier's movements and his purchases of poison seriously. Scotland Yard, the episode's series, presents the case in dramatised form.
The Blue Anchor, a country inn and hotel in England, in the 1920s, later the courtroom at Guildford.
Characters: Jean-Pierre Vaquier, Mabel Jones, Alfred Jones, Mrs. Fisher
Listen for: The account of how Vaquier bought poison from a chemist and signed a false name in the poison book, and the identification parade where the chemist picks him out.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
