George Valentine receives a cryptic letter from Professor Fulton, a genealogist searching for something in the old Senator Culliver house in the town of Culliver. The house is now inhabited by the senator's two surviving daughters, Claudine and another sister, who have kept a mysterious vigil there for fifteen years since their youngest sister Esther's death. When George arrives at the decaying mansion with its famous rose petal-colored marble staircase, he discovers a disturbing secret hidden within its walls.
