What happens
When newspaper compositor Joe Hagerty kills himself after falling into debt to loan sharks, his daughter Mary asks private investigator George Valentine to find the real murderers behind his death. George discovers that two suspected sharks, Pagano and Ringler, have evaded police prosecution because witnesses are too frightened to testify. He devises a daring plan to turn the suspects against each other using a fake newspaper story.
A city newspaper office, the Clarion, and police headquarters; the story centers on a newspaper composing room where employees fall victim to loan sharks.
Characters: George Valentine, Mary Hagerty, Lieutenant Johnson, Mr. Wells, Oscar Strike, Jake Pagano, Stan Ringler
Listen for: George's scheme to use a fabricated newspaper story to manipulate the loan sharks into betraying each other; the tension between police procedure and private investigation methods.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
