What happens

Insurance investigator Johnny Dollar is called back from vacation in La Jolla, California when Thomas Lamar dies suddenly. Lamar carried a million-and-a-half-dollar insurance policy, and Johnny's boss Pat McCracken suspects murder. Johnny travels to South Bend, Indiana with Lamar's adopted daughter Ronnie, arriving at the impressive Lamar Hall to begin his investigation into what may have been foul play.

South Bend, Indiana and the Lamar family estate on Parity Lane; Johnny begins in California but travels east by plane to investigate.
