What happens

Insurance investigator Johnny Dollar investigates a $50,000 life insurance policy taken out on Mike Flynn, a Bowery derelict, by the mysterious John Wesley Cosgrave. When Mike survives multiple murder attempts—an ice pick stabbing, two gunshot wounds, and nearly fatal wood alcohol poisoning—Dollar learns that Cosgrave is actually a reformed gangster with a criminal past, and begins to suspect the insurance policy is part of an elaborate scheme to kill the supposedly indestructible Mike and collect the payout.

New York City, including the Lower East Side, the Helping Hand Rescue Mission, police headquarters, Cosgrave's upscale apartment at 621 East 49th Street, and the Breakley Hotel.
