What happens

Insurance investigator Johnny Dollar is called to New York to handle a policy claim on murdered racketeer Barney Rico. When Rico's brother Dave is also killed and names Gino Gambona—a crime boss supposedly in Sicily—as his murderer, Dollar must track down whether Gambona has secretly returned to America and uncover the truth behind the murders.

New York City, including restaurants, a barbershop, a nightclub called the Pirates' Den, an apartment building, and a ship called the Atlantic Star at the docks.
