What happens

Paladin is hired by Mrs. Clell Thomas to travel to the mining town of Wairika and prove her husband's innocence in a murder charge. Upon arrival, Paladin is arrested after a brawl with the local sheriff's son and thrown into a cell with Clell Thomas himself, who is awaiting trial and wants nothing to do with Paladin's help.

Wairika, a bustling mining town in the mountains, 1875. The action moves from the Carlton Hotel in San Francisco to the jail in Wairika.
