What happens

Dan Holiday is summoned to Riddell College by his friend Bob Lanham, a professor who is troubled by a puzzle: his fiancée Evelyn has broken off their engagement and is now engaged to Ed Maclin, her late uncle's laboratory assistant. The strange part is that Evelyn ended their engagement just before her uncle, Professor Gardner, died by suicide—despite the professor having no apparent reason to take his own life. Dan begins investigating the mysterious death.

Riddell College and the surrounding town of Radellen, a small college town where Professor Gardner taught mineralogy and crystallography.
