What happens

Dan Holiday receives a letter from the wealthy and reclusive Mrs. Matilda Cartland requesting his help. At dinner the following evening, Mrs. Cartland shocks Dan by announcing to her grandson Peter and his girlfriend Peggy Wright that she and Dan are engaged. Mrs. Cartland reveals her true motive: she believes Peggy is a fortune hunter after Peter's inheritance, and she wants Dan to pose as her fiancé to discourage the girl by making it clear Peter won't inherit her money.

The wealthy Cartland mansion and surrounding city locations; primarily Mrs. Cartland's darkened home and the dining room.

Characters: Dan Holiday, Mrs. Matilda Cartland, Peter, Peggy Wright, Susie

Listen for: The tense initial meeting between Dan and the imperious dowager, the shocking dinner announcement of their supposed engagement, and Mrs. Cartland's scheme to protect her grandson from a fortune hunter.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
