Some legends, some hearsay, but also interesting that we'd like to pass them along to you. And to do this, here's Radio's number one sports reporter, Bill Stern. Good evening. Tonight I'm back in New York City from Hollywood, California.
Our guest tonight in New York is one of America's most famous orchestra leaders, Sammy K. But first, here is... real one. Port of an auto race. This is the story of one of the strangest auto races ever run.
It begins back in the year of 1901 when the biggest auto race held each year was a race run at Gross Point, Michigan However back in that year of 1901 it was a foregone conclusion that the race at Gross Point would be won by the leading auto racer of that day a Racing driver named Alexander Winter for as many racing fans said I'll bet Alex Whitten wins
Of course he will Alexander witnessed America's leading racing driver. He always wins Everybody in that great crowd at Gross Point knew that Alex Whinton was going to win. And as the race began, Alexander Whinton did go out in front.
Round the track is powerful car roared until suddenly, suddenly Alexander went and lost his lead to an amateur. An amateur who was driving in his first race. And in a sensational burst of speed, this ranked amateur won a great victory that day.
Such a great victory. The bat night on the streets all over America. Newsboys were yelling. The X3, X3, amateur auto driver wins championship of America X3, X3, X3, X4. Maybe you'd like to know the name of that amateur auto racer who became the auto racing champion of America in one race.
