What happens

Chief Superintendent Peter Carrouth of Scotland Yard is called to the village of Mattfield, near Tunbridge, where Chief Constable Thomas Bennett has found three women shot dead in a garden. Carrouth and Detective Sergeant Small examine the house and grounds, where a servant, Margaret Evans, and a mother and daughter lie dead. Among the clues are a single woman's glove and a set of broken teacups. Carrouth begins to question the household's friends and acquaintances, including John Ames, the estranged husband of one of the victims. This is the first episode of the Whitehall 1212 series, first broadcast on 1951-11-18 and drawn from Scotland Yard files, with the stories written and directed by Willis Cooper.

Listen for: The clues the officers find at the garden: the single woman's glove and the fragments of the teacups, and what they suggest about the number of people present.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
