What happens

Victor Goodt and his wife Sade are at home one evening, with their son Rush sitting nearby over his algebra book. Victor plans to go downtown the next afternoon to buy a new hat, and the couple argue about whether he can choose one himself or needs Sade along. Victor complains that clerks treat him like a child, while Sade insists on supervising. Rush keeps trying to tell a rambling joke about Smelly Clark's uncle and a fish dinner in Peoria, but his parents keep cutting in. The evening is interrupted when the Doncydoodles arrive for a game of 500. The Vic and Sade radio series aired on NBC in 1938, and its lead actors are Bernardine Flynn and Bill Idelson.

The Goodt family's small house in the evening, and a downtown Cleveland department store the next afternoon

Listen for: Victor's complaints about clerks and his plan to buy a hat, and Rush's attempts to finish his fish-dinner joke

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
