What happens

Russell learns from his brother Vic that Vic has been named boss of the Consolidated Kitchenware Company plant for a day while Mr. Rubish is away in Chicago. Vic, who is the chief accountant, is pleased and tells the family at home in the kitchen. Mother and Sade ask how it happened and whether the promotion is real, and Vic presses his point about the arrangement. Mr. Rubish's office is being fitted with carpenters' work, and Vic reasons that the offer of it is a courtesy. The family's reactions show mild doubt about how much authority the day will carry, and the scene closes with Vic left unconvinced by his own news.

A small house halfway up the block, in the kitchen, late afternoon.

Characters: Russell, Vic, Sade, Mother, Smelly Clark, Mr. Rubish, Mr. Clooney, Gove

Listen for: Vic's announcement that he will be in charge of the plant tomorrow, and the family's questions about why it was arranged.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
