What happens
Vic and Sade's son Rush is reading a lurid adventure novel aloud when his mother Sade realizes she forgot to call their neighbor, Mr. Sludge. Miss Harris, who usually looks in on him, is away, and Sludge is alone in his big house. Sade phones him to offer him a place to sleep on the family's davenport. Sludge is nervous about staying alone at night, and the family grows impatient with his shyness and timidity, while Rush's novel keeps breaking into the scene. The Gook family is busy with the household as they wait for him to arrive. This is a Vic and Sade episode from 1940-06-17 on NBC, CBS and Mutual, with Bernardine Flynn and Bill Idelson in the lead roles.
The small house halfway up the next block, the Gook family's living room in the early evening

Listen for: Sade's impatience as she waits for Mr. Sludge to answer the phone, and Rush's reading from his adventure novel
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
