What happens

Willie Gooks arrives home in the late afternoon and tells his mother that Bernice, the sister of Howard, has died. Howard is Mr. Gumpox's horse, and Bernice was a milk wagon horse, as Willie learned from the milkman. Willie reports that Mr. Gumpox was upset and that Howard seemed stricken. Willie telephones Uncle Fletcher, who already knows the news from speaking with Mr. Gumpox. Mrs. Gooks discusses the family's plans for the evening, including a trip to the picture show. Willie describes a strange moment in the alley when Howard stopped dead in his tracks at the time of Bernice's death. The scene is a domestic one, centred on the household's reaction to the loss of a horse.

A small house in the late afternoon, with Willie and his mother in the living room, followed by the family's evening.

Listen for: Willie's account of Howard stopping dead in the alley at two minutes past eleven.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
