This Day in Old Time Radio is the daily old-time radio podcast: every day, one complete classic radio show that first aired on this date in history, from the golden age of radio, the 1930s to the 1960s. Westerns, detective shows, comedy, science fiction and suspense: Gunsmoke, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, Suspense, The Jack Benny Program, X Minus One, Our Miss Brooks and more, remastered. Host Winnie Hale, radio archivist, sets each broadcast in its day and tells you what else was on the air that date. A new episode every day. A Stupid Potato show.
This Day in Old Time Radio is a free daily old-time radio podcast from Stupid Potato. Every day it plays one complete classic radio show that first went out over the air on that same calendar date, sometime between the 1930s and the early 1960s: a western, a private-eye drama, a sitcom, a science-fiction story or a thriller, start to finish, the way listeners heard it that night. It is "on this day in history" for the golden age of radio.
Your host is Winnie Hale, the keeper of the Stupid Potato archive. Before each broadcast she gives you the date and the year it aired, who made the series and who starred in it, a hook for the story without giving away the ending, and what else from the archive was on the air on the same date in other years. Then the show plays whole, and she signs off with a nod to tomorrow's date.
Radio was the country's living room from the 1930s until television took over in the 1950s. Families planned their evenings around Jack Benny on Sunday night, Gunsmoke brought the adult western to CBS in 1952, and Suspense ran for twenty years as "radio's outstanding theater of thrills." The era is usually said to have ended on September 30, 1962, when Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar and Suspense aired their last episodes on CBS. Every recording here is remastered for steady, clean sound.
