What happens

Sam Spade is hired by Louise Millard to help her boyfriend Ben Kamiskey, who has been arrested for armed robbery and refuses to see anyone, not even his public defender. When Louise attempts suicide after Ben pleads guilty, Spade investigates and discovers a mysterious tough named Claude Bettering may be involved in more than just the crime.
