What happens
Homicide Captain Tom York is called to a tavern after Red Dugan is found stabbed in a back room. Witnesses say Nick Dinescu was with Dugan shortly before the killing, and a knife bearing Nick's initials is found at the scene. York learns that Dinescu had reason to resent Dugan over a former girlfriend, Sadie, and he heads to Sadie's apartment, where Nick is hiding. The story follows York's questioning of Sadie, who is living with Big Jim Diamond, and the claims each person makes about the night's events.
