What happens

Nick Carter is called in to help Ellen Marvin find his fiancée Alice Evans, who disappeared from the ship after returning from South America. When Nick meets the young woman claiming to be Alice at her hotel, something seems oddly wrong. Nick begins investigating her true identity while also searching for Alice's missing father, a wealthy man who was supposed to meet the boat but never arrived.

New York City, including a ship dock, the Hamilton Park Hotel, and Nick Carter's office. The story begins with Alice's arrival from South America.
