What happens

A two-bit crook named Whitey Gear is shot dead at First and Water Streets with a note bearing Don Mason's name in his pocket. Don Mason, sales manager at Hughes Publishing and engaged to the boss's daughter, claims he can't remember where he was last night due to blackouts. When Nick Carter investigates, he finds Don's gun has three recently fired bullets, and gray tweed fibers from Don's coat match those found under Whitey's fingernails.

A city waterfront district and Hughes Publishing House office, during the night and following morning.

Characters: Nick Carter, master detective, Don Mason, sales manager at Hughes Publishing, Whitey Gear, a small-time crook, Chris Bentley, Don's roommate and fellow salesman, Mr. Hughes, publishing house owner, Sergeant Matty

Listen for: Nick Carter begins his investigation into Whitey's murder, uncovering suspicious evidence that points toward Don Mason while Don struggles to recall his movements from the previous night.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
