What happens
Mr. Buckley asks detective Nick Carter to investigate Roger Denham, who is to marry his daughter and has won the contract for the new Buckley office building. Carter declines, but Denham is soon found strangled in his room at the Royal Arms hotel. Carter's assistants Waldo and Matty find a torn piece of silk clenched in the dead man's fist, and the room shows signs that someone searched it. A wire running from the closet suggests a recording device was in use. The series, Nick Carter, Master Detective, aired on Mutual on June 4, 1946, with Lon Clark, Charlotte Manson and Leon Janney in the lead roles. Carter questions Denham's wife and his former army friend Johnny Casper while tracing the dictaphone and the shirts.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
