What happens

Duke Orlando hires lawyer Lester Harrington to defend his torpedo, the Ohio Kid, against a murder charge. Orlando pays for the defense with a $100,000 check drawn on the Pierpont crime syndicate, a loan the syndicate's board has refused. When Harrington tells banker P.J. Pierpont about the check, the syndicate decides to recover it. Orlando, frightened, phones District Attorney Gatorne repeatedly, offering to surrender, while the witness Lucky Lynch lies gravely wounded in hospital. The story is part of the Mr. District Attorney series, first broadcast in 1939.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
