What happens

Kenneth Thurston, known only as Mr. X, is drawn into a mystery in New York after a dying man, Ama Pahalani, passes him a sealed letter meant for an Indian Maharaja. Mr. X travels to India, where he meets the Maharaja's prime minister, who denies knowing Pahalani, and a princess who claims her uncle is a cruel ruler. Mr. X's efforts to deliver the letter lead him into the palace, where the contract and its fate are tangled in intrigue. The Man Called X is the series name for this 1944 episode, broadcast on September 30, 1944, starring Herbert Marshall as Mr. X.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
