What happens

Ken Thurston, the man called X, investigates a black market in gold that threatens the economic stability of the world. Working for the Philippine Ministry of Finance, he traces the smuggling to Macau, where the gambling hall run by the powerful Madam Hong Shan is involved. On a steamer bound for Macau he meets the author Francis Burton, the physician Dr. D'Amico, and a man named Maurice, and a murder in a cabin draws him deeper into the affair. Herbert Marshall stars as Ken Thurston in this episode of the series The Man Called X, first broadcast on October 9, 1947.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
