What happens

Lum and Abner run the general store in Pine Ridge, where they have recently opened a small public library. Grandpa Spears spends the morning reading an almanac aloud, offering facts about towns and dates to anyone nearby. Lum becomes interested in cooking after reading a book by a famous chef, and he begins to imagine a career in food. Meanwhile, a customer named Mamie arrives looking for bread, but the store is out because the bread truck has not come for two days. The incident gives Abner an idea: Pine Ridge might need a bakery of its own. The episode is part of the Lum and Abner series, first broadcast on December 2, 1941, with Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and Lurene Tuttle in the leading roles.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
