What happens
Lum and Abner are the proprietors of the Jot-Em-Down Store in Pine Ridge, and they are now running a new bank. A stranger has left a tin box in their vault for safekeeping and paid them five dollars for the trouble. Lum and Abner grow curious about what the mysterious box holds, and Abner becomes convinced it may contain a map to lost treasure. Their talk turns to Mose, the barber, and to a tale that the stranger is his cousin. Their curiosity mounts as they debate whether to open the box, while the bank's customers and visitors drop by. The broadcast stops during the box business, with the two men still wondering what is inside. Chester Lauck and Norris Goff star, with Lurene Tuttle, in this episode of the Lum and Abner series, which aired on August 29, 1941.
The new bank in Pine Ridge
Characters: Lum, Abner, Cedric Weehunt
Listen for: Abner's growing certainty that the tin box holds a treasure map, and the way the two men argue over whether to open it
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
