What happens
Lum and Abner receive a sales manual they ordered to boost trade at their Jot 'Em Down store in Pine Ridge. Eager to try its promised seventy-two percent increase in three days, the partners gather around the book and begin reading aloud its advice on greeting customers and flattering them. Their first attempt at following the method with a customer, Grandpa Spears, goes badly, as the new flattery and fussing leave him suspicious and annoyed. This is a 1941 episode of the Lum and Abner radio series, first broadcast September 30, 1941, starring Chester Lauck and Norris Goff, with Lurene Tuttle.
The Jot 'Em Down store in Pine Ridge
Characters: Lum Edwards, Abner Peabody, Grandpa Spears, Dick Hudson
Listen for: Lum and Abner reading the salesmanship book's advice aloud and trying it out on Grandpa Spears
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
