What happens
Lum Edwards and Abner Peabody run the old grocery and dry-goods store in Pine Ridge, and they worry that their customers have drifted to Dick Huddleson's store. Lum blames Dick for taking their business while they were sleeping, and Abner misunderstands him, suggesting they might keep their own store open at night. Lum proposes that they need better salesmanship to win customers back. Abner has seen an advertisement for a book on modern salesmanship and has asked the mail carrier to look for a copy at the county seat. The advertisement promises to double a salesman's earnings, and a letter in it praises a former Pine Ridge boy's success. Lum and Abner keep arguing over the advertisement's mousetrap wording and the trap ideas that follow.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
