What happens

Lum and Abner, the partners who run the general store in Pine Ridge, are at odds after a surprise birthday dinner for Lum went awkwardly wrong, leaving schoolteacher Miss Frederick embarrassed. Lum is eager to win her back and hopes for a quiet supper with her. Abner and Grandpappy Spears suggest the store could double as a free public library, which Lum sees as a way to keep Miss Frederick close to home. The episode is from the Lum and Abner series, first broadcast on November 10, 1941, with Chester Lauck and Norris Goff in the lead roles and Lurene Tuttle as Miss Frederick. This excerpt covers the first part of the episode.

Characters: Lum, Abner, Miss Frederick, Grandpappy Spears, Elizabeth

Listen for: Lum and Abner arguing over whether the library idea is really about Miss Frederick, and Abner's comments about her studies

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
