What happens
Lum Edwards wants to take Miss Frederick to supper at Luke Spear's lunchroom, but he is too embarrassed to make the call himself, so his helper Cedric phones for him. Cedric's calls get tangled, and the date plan becomes a mix-up when Lum asks Luke to keep the restaurant open late for them. Abner, meanwhile, notices Lum's odd behavior and starts to suspect a secret. The Lum and Abner series, broadcast on November 7, 1941 by NBC, Mutual, CBS and ABC, features Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and Lurene Tuttle. This part of the episode follows the planning of the evening and ends with Abner deciding to join in.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
