What happens
Lum and Abner are setting up a free public library in Pine Ridge, with Lum eager to impress the new schoolteacher, Miss Fredericks. Abner works at the store, and a checkers game with Grandpappy Spears turns into a dispute over cheating and the library's rules. Lum then becomes fixated on the idea of getting a pair of lions to guard the library's entrance, as he has seen in a picture of the New York Library. Abner's attempts to help him lead to a deal with a stranger who quotes a price of $100 for the animals. The episode is from the Lum and Abner series, first aired on November 13, 1941, with Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and Lurene Tuttle in the lead roles.
Pine Ridge general store, which has been partly turned into a library
Characters: Lum Edwards, Abner Peabody, Grandpappy Spears, Miss Fredericks
Listen for: Lum's insistence that the library needs lions, and Abner's offer to help him get them
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
