What happens
Lum Edwards tells Abner Peabody that he has been sick at home with a swollen jaw, though Abner suspects he was knocked out in a fight with Mousey Gray. Mousey, a shy man secretly in love with Gussie Hogan, has set out to fight Snake Hogan, Gussie's brother, and the town talk spreads quickly. Lum's cover story keeps shifting as Cedric Wagner and others drop by with news from the barbershop. Abner tries to warn Gussie by telephone before Snake and Mousey meet. Cedric is sent off in his car to bring Mousey and Gussie to the county seat.
