What happens
Lum and Abner set up a collection point in the Pine Ridge store, placing boxes by the door so townsfolk can donate old toothpaste tubes, newspapers and hot water bottles for the war effort. They call them Victory Boxes. Meanwhile Cedric, the circulation man for D'Argeny Smith's pamphlets, has been fretting over a mix-up with a package and is sent out on the road with Mouse to gather donations. Later, Dedrick reports back with a truckload of his own, and Mrs. Samner sets off a mild argument over whether a stranger can be judged by appearance. Lum and Abner and the townsfolk trade gossip and misunderstandings. The series is Lum and Abner, first aired on February 23, 1942, with Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and Lurene Tuttle in the lead roles.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
