What happens

Lum and Abner, the proprietors of the general store in Pine Ridge, try out the methods in a book on modern salesmanship they recently bought. At the store, Abner and Grandpappy Spears sneak in a game of checkers, and Lum is tidying the shelves and washing the windows. Squire Skimp arrives with a salesman's pitch and offers to take over the store's sales work for a salary, and Lum and Abner consider the offer. Grandpappy Spears gives them his plain opinion about how their new approach is affecting customers. This is an episode of the radio series Lum and Abner, first aired on October 3, 1941, with Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and Lurene Tuttle in the lead roles.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
