What happens

Lum and Abner, the Pine Ridge storekeepers, face a romantic tangle after Lum's locket and love note, baked into a loaf of bread, turn up in the hands of Gussie Hogan, who is sure the note was meant for her. Lum is afraid to back out because of her brother Snake's bad temper and strength, so he asks Abner to help him discourage her. Meanwhile Grandpa Gaddis, reading an adventure novel in the library section of the store, gets caught up in the story and comes away with an idea for a bakery scheme that involves hiding prize money in loaves of bread. This is the Lum and Abner radio series, first broadcast in 1941 on NBC, Mutual, CBS and ABC, with Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and Lurene Tuttle in the leading roles.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
