What happens

Lum and Abner's residents of Pine Ridge gossip about Cedric's sudden wealth, which he refuses to explain while spending freely from the mail order catalog. Grandpappy Spears reads aloud stories of King Midas and Aladdin at the Jotam Downs store, and Lum and Granny Spears speculate about the source of Cedric's money. Squire Skimp sets out to become Cedric's money manager and ends up in the store seeking advice. Lum recalls a lantern carried by a stranger who left town, and begins to suspect it may be connected to Cedric's new riches. Abner is away from Pine Ridge, so Lum is handling the store and post office in his place. The Lum and Abner series features Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and Lurene Tuttle, and this episode first aired on March 10, 1942.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
