What happens
Abner Peabody, a Pine Ridge man competing in the Arginine Smith contest for the most honest, kind and generous person in town, is named a pamphlet writer and given the title of disseminator of literature. Lum Edwards, his rival in the contest, is his partner in a scheme to share a $10,000 prize. Abner brings his pamphlets to Dogpatch Dodge's printing shop and hands the writing to Lum, but the arrangement is about to come apart. This is an episode of the long-running radio comedy Lum and Abner, which aired on NBC, Mutual, CBS and ABC, and it stars Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and Lurene Tuttle.
Pine Ridge, a small rural community, in the town's general store and its surroundings.
Characters: Abner Peabody, Lum Edwards, Dogpatch Dodge, Arginine Smith, Cedric, Miss Blivens
Listen for: Abner's pretentious speech about green ink and his praise of his own dependability, which both collapse when Lum's role in the pamphlets is exposed.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
