What happens
George Valentine receives a desperate letter from Fred Dundee, who admits to stealing money to pay off a debt to Phil Pagano, a loan shark working for Douglas Harger. Fred wants George to expose Harger's criminal racket. George takes the case for free and confronts Harger at his Melody Club, extracting $350 from him. When the police prove unhelpful, George and his assistant Miss Brooks devise a plan to get closer to Pagano by having Brooks pose as a woman in need of money.
A city with the Melody Club, Molly's Cafe on Pierpont Street, and various other locations including a police station and Pagano's apartment.
Characters: George Valentine, Fred Dundee, Miss Brooks, Douglas Harger, Phil Pagano, Lieutenant Riley
Listen for: The clever confrontation between George and Harger at the club, and the developing scheme to trap Pagano through Miss Brooks's impersonation.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
