What happens

George Valentine receives a letter from Emily asking him to help her friend Eddie Prokosh, a sixteen-year-old boy being released from a work camp after serving time for being caught in a stolen car. Emily fears Eddie will turn to crime to prove everyone's low expectations of him correct. George investigates Eddie's case, talking to Emily, Eddie's estranged father, and a local political organizer, while also learning of a neighborhood troublemaker named Stan Lucas who may have played a role in Eddie's troubles.
