What happens

Magazine editor Arnold Loomis writes to private investigator George Valentine with a disturbing confession: he lied to police about being robbed at gunpoint, claiming a man took $1,000 he'd lost at the racetrack. Now an innocent man named Neil Denquist has been arrested for the crime, found with the exact bills Loomis described. Loomis is tormented by his fabrication but fears the truth will destroy his marriage and land him in jail.

A city with a racetrack, police headquarters, and jail cells; George Valentine's office.

Characters: George Valentine, Arnold Loomis, Brooksie, Neil Denquist, Francine Denquist, Mrs. Denquist, Lieutenant

Listen for: The ingenious twist that Denquist's false confession was actually meant to provide him an alibi for a far more serious crime—a murder that took place at the exact time he claimed the robbery occurred.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
