What happens

George Valentine receives a frantic letter from a woman claiming she's in mortal danger and begging him to come to an apartment address. He rushes across town to help, but discovers the whole thing is an elaborate hoax. Lieutenant Williams and the police have arranged a surprise birthday party for George, complete with five famous mystery writers attending the celebration.
