What happens
George Valentine is hired by Lou Mendel, owner of the nightclub the Top Hat, to investigate a mysterious attack. Mendel was knocked unconscious after finding an envelope containing a thousand dollars and a cryptic note beneath a dressing room door. The note reads: "The picture was not even worth the price of a loge, but this is where I came in." When Mendel's apartment is searched, he discovers that a dancer named Dove, who works at his club and whom several men seem protective of, is somehow connected to the trouble.
New York City: the Top Hat nightclub, Dove's apartment, and city streets
Characters: George Valentine, Lou Mendel, Dove, Max (taxi driver), Lieutenant Johnson, Mr. Andrews, JJ Stopes, Landlord
Listen for: A clever blackmail scheme involving doctored photographs, unexpected violence, and an examination of fingerprint evidence that reveals the true murderer among several suspects with connections to an innocent young woman.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
