What happens

Insurance investigator Johnny Dollar arrives in New Orleans to investigate an assassination attempt on Dan Valentine, a man with a criminal past from the Prohibition era who is now trying to live quietly. When Valentine refuses to cooperate with police about the shooting, Dollar must piece together the mystery while also discovering that Valentine's estranged wife has mysteriously appeared at the hospital.
