What happens

Insurance investigator Johnny Dollar is drawn into a case involving a valuable necklace called the Tears of Night. When two men are murdered in the apartment of Mrs. Elise Wendover, Dollar becomes a suspect himself. As the investigation unfolds, Dollar discovers a complex scheme involving a pawned necklace, a jeweler with his own designs, and multiple murders connected to greed and deception.

A city apartment and surrounding locations including a police station, hospital, hotel, and jewelry shop. The story takes place over the course of a single night and following morning.
