What happens

Johnny Dollar, an insurance investigator for State Unity Life, looks into the death of Bernard Slade, a penny arcade operator in Ocean Park, California, who was shot in his living quarters. Slade's apartment is covered with photographs of silent-screen stars, many of them of Mavis Gale, and someone has drawn question marks over her pictures in red crayon. Mavis Gale is named as the beneficiary of Slade's insurance policy. Dollar questions Slade's acquaintances along the pier and learns of a mysterious friend known only as the preacher. The episode is from the series Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, first broadcast on CBS Radio on October 29, 1956, starring Bob Bailey.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
