What happens
Jack Benny and his cast present their stage version of the film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre on the Jack Benny program, a comedy series on NBC and CBS Radio that first aired on May 1, 1949. Before the parody begins, the company trades jokes and cast-list banter. Jack Benny casts himself as the lead, with Don Wilson as his partner and Dennis Day as the old prospector. The sketch follows a penniless American in Tampico who meets a friend and hears of gold in the mountains. Jack Benny and Mary Livingstone star in this episode, with Phil Harris, Eddie Anderson and Dennis Day in supporting roles. The portion recorded here covers the opening of the adventure, as the two men set out on their search.
A hot, humid day in Tampico, Mexico, and then the mountains of the Sierra Madre, as heard on the Jack Benny studio program
Characters: Jack Benny, Don Wilson, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Dennis Day, Mel Blank, Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston
Listen for: The stage parody of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, in which Jack Benny plays the lead opposite Don Wilson and the cast trade gags about the film and its characters
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
