What happens
Jack Benny and his cast stage a version of Clare Booth's play The Women for their Jell-O radio program. The transcript is noisy and sponsor-heavy, but the premise is clear: Jack casts the performers in women's roles, with Phil Harris, Don Wilson, Mary Livingstone, Dennis Day and Eddie Anderson among them. Dennis Day is cast as a five-year-old daughter, and Eddie Anderson's character is given a maid's role. The sketch opens in the Benny household, where Mrs. Benny and her daughter Denise discuss her husband's late nights at the office. Mrs. Benny is brought news by a friend about Updyke, and the scene moves to the Park Villa, where the women gather to gossip. The guide covers only the early part of the episode. The original air date was 1939-11-05 on NBC and CBS Radio.
The Benny household and the Park Villa Hotel, as staged on the Jack Benny radio program.
Characters: Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Dennis Day, Don Wilson, Eddie Anderson, Mrs. Benny, Denise
Listen for: Jack Benny casting his cast in the women's roles, and the catty conversations among the society women at the Park Villa.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
