What happens
Jack Benny complains to Don Wilson and Mary Livingstone about a difficult screen test and his rivalry with Fred MacMurray, while Phil Harris and Kenny Baker tease him over a romance. The cast then stages a comic radio version of the film The Hurricane, set on the South Sea island of Manakura, where Governor Delage, played by Benny, refuses to pardon a native prisoner named Tarangi. This is the Jell-O program, a 1938 episode of the Jack Benny series, first aired on January 30, 1938, with Benny, Livingstone, Eddie Anderson and Phil Harris among its leads. The governor's wife, Jermaine, is played by Livingstone, and the captain and doctor are played by Wilson and Harris.
A radio studio on the Jell-O program, and the fictional South Sea island of Manakura in the stage play
Characters: Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Don Wilson, Phil Harris, Kenny Baker, Andy, Governor Delage, Jermaine
Listen for: The governor's refusal to pardon Tarangi, and the dramatised hurricane that follows
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
